Have you recently purchased or are about to purchase a property in Malta, or maybe moved into a new one? Or want to remodel your property? Not sure on how to design the space? Here are the top 4 interior design trends for 2023 according to industry experts.
1. Environmentally - Conscious Design
People are more conscious about the environment and long for a connection with nature. Hence, designing properties and environments that are in harmony with the natural world, whilst still being super-chic and upscale, will be on the up rise in 2023. A shift towards organic and layered textures, instead of synthetic materials such as acrylic, is expected - a design trick that boosts serenity says Alison Spiteri Sacco of Evolve.
Interior designer Marica Bartolo of Design & Print Studio predicts an elevated approach to minimalism that combine simple silhouettes and natural materials, leading the consumer to opt for refined woven materials like cane and earthy wood options like walnut wood and oak.
As consumers and property experts advocate for greener properties, sustainable design will remain a priority. This entails in looking for ways to design against global waste, rather than add to it; encouraging renewable materials like wool, cotton, bamboo, linoleum, and cork across design elements like flooring, furniture, textiles, and building materials.
2. Wavy Stripes
Wavy stripes are, quite literally, making waves in the design world – and Interior designers explain that there is a good reason behind it.
More than ever before, the role of a home as a place of comfort, sanctuary and protection continues to grow, so will a drive towards colours, patterns, materials and shapes that provide people with a sense of calmness and emotional haven. Very often, waves are associated with water and the sea, which are known to evoke feelings of calm and relaxation.
Therefore, patterns with wavy stripes are the ideal choice for encouraging moments of mindfulness at home.
3. Rich, Saturated Colours
Deep reds, blue, and greens will also take the spotlight in 2023. Interior designer Marica Bartolo of Design & Print Studio predicts an uptick of colourful furniture and walls coming in the future.
“Some have been hesitant to incorporate colours into their homes, but with everyone out and about again and traveling, I see people being bolder and more fearless in their selections,” she says. This is further supported by Alison Spiteri Sacco of Evolve, “We’ve seen a drastic shift in the selection of paint colours in the last few months of 2022, in fact our most popular colours are the dark vivid red colours by Kraft Paints.
4. Multi-Purpose Interiors
In 2023, rooms must serve multiple functions. Marica Bartolo of Design & Print Studio emphasises the importance of creating flexible interiors wisely and with a purpose. “For example a kitchen isn't just a place where the cooking is done; it’s a work station on weekdays and a place for entertaining during weekends and holidays”. For this reason, multi-use areas are increasingly in demand, says Marica. Hence, it is vital that before planning a space, one sits down and carefully thinks on the function or purpose for that particular space.
